{the Last Lecture}

This book was an easy read which mad it enjoyable. I thought this man had a great love for life. He knows what is most important. A few things I liked:

  • Something that's more important than childhood dreams: spouse and kids
  • Brick walls let us prove how much we want things
  • You can get more things from trying to accomplish a dream than you can from actually accomplishing the dream
  • Fundamentals precede the Fancy Stuff
  • Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted
  • Set your expectations for kids higher when they exceed your expectations... i.e. 'you did pretty good this time, but I know you can do better'
  • Self Esteem isn't something you give a child, you give them opportunities to accomplish something difficult so they can feel good about themselves for doing something truly great, not just senseless praise
I think that this book is a good read. It had some interesting insights and it really makes you reevaluate the way you live, and what you value. I can't really put his experiences into context in my life. He had lots of little sayings and phrases that were valuable, but I just felt like I couldn't put my hand all the way around them. Overall, he sounds like a great man who values the most important thing - in this we are similar - our families.

I read about this guy in the Reader's Digest. He has terminal cancer (I imagine that's in the book). It sounds very inspirational, and of course, I resonate with the emphasis that he places on the family. Thanks for sharing!
